Welsh Cobs Diary 21 May 2008

Great news !! Saith Magical Charm, now in the ownership of Juliet and Adrian, has foaled and produced a beautiful jet black colt with no white apart from one white star. He is by Monumental Mason, owned by Lisa Breese of the Northwick stud.

I tried to swop Sebastian, but she wasnt having any of it. ! Already having hugs and enjoying them and only a few days old. Ahhhh

Been a busy week this week so not alot of riding although my son decided to have a riding lesson and I put him on JB bareback and he was doing ok and trotting just staying on and the next thing he was on the floor. Lesson ended that day, with him doing his Gcse's at the moment thought ummm is this a ploy to get a broken arm ! :)

He was fine, but JB was the funny one, I dont think he really noticed and when I stopped him and went over to rob, JB suddenly went all spooky at rob on the floor. It was so funny. I jumped on him then and just had a quick 5 mins play and still cant sit to his bouncy and extended trot - will I ever get my independent seat !

I still think bareback is under rated. Spanish riding shcool do it for over a year without reins and saddle until they can sit to anything. Stops you collapsing too ! You cant collapse when riding bareback or you will fall off.

Anyway back to the saddle tomorrow, will feel strange after a week bareback. I need to go faster than a very steady sitting trot !

I think he does too ! ha ha. Trying to sort out doing some galloping with him soon, have a local trainer near us and would like to see if I can use his track to give him a blast. He does love his galloping. Thats part of the problem with the canter which we are still working on. He gets so excited that he just cant contain himself and I want him to be light and under me, so putting stronger bits etc., is no good.

He will come, just take a bit longer than I thought, but I know that he is honest and does want to please as much as possible. Just its sooooooooo exciting to go into canter as he thinks its the start to gallop.

Seb is doing great and saw the farrier for the first time day and his eyes popped out ! He has huge eyes. Lovely fella.

Everyone else is fine and sapphie had a lovely bath today, she is beautiful. Cant wait to show her again and hopefully next week the saddle comes. Went for an ideal working hunter. Beautiful saddle. Then we can start on her properly. Im looking forward to it.

Dream and JB are off to the Bath & West show next week. Very early start we are on about 8.am ! LOL Going to be a groggy run. :)

Welsh Cobs Diary 13 May 2008

Had a wonderful time on Sunday. Saith Johnnie bach and Saith Magical Amber went on a fun ride together through some stunning scenery in Wiltshire. We did the 10 miles in a hour and 15 mins with JB getting more excited at the end of the ride than at the beginning.

Still stiff and aching today ! What a beautiful day it was. Emily was riding amber and we both really enjoyed it.

Decided to call the new foal Saith Sebastian. He is growing well and having a great start with the lovely weather.

Bath time today !

welsh cobs pictures Here he is !

2.30am this morning - Orange / talk talk / 02 was born. Yes chestnut !! LOL Now everyone knows I love blacks, bays, duns, pallies, but chestnuts ! :)

My son Robbie decided to stay and was asleep on a makeships hay bed - Coriander kept going over and sniffing him and nickering ! ahhh she thought he was her foal - I kept explaining very loudly - its still inside !!

So steve arrived at 1.30 and she produced a chestnut colt. One of the reasons we used Monumental Mason was the incredible muscle structure that he had, and it has come out in Pumpkin, yam, carrot top. (as you can see from the photo taken at 7 hrs old !)

We eventually got home at 4.30am, with my husband in bed saying all ok? Chestnut I said ! :) Back up at 8.30am to check all was ok and he came straight over to me and had a stratch. Fab temperament, and such a lovely lad. OK, he may be chestnut, but already he is working his way into my heart.

Moved superbly - at this really young age ! Im very excited about him.

So photo overload soon, as new webpage should be up and running.

Welsh Cobs Diary 30 Apr 2008

Steve and I are still waiting for Paith Magical Coriander to foal, with bated breath ! She is in foal to Monumental Mason, a stunning stallion owned by Northwick stud.

The weather has been terrible, so no riding for a few days now. Took JB out on a hack with a friend riding Amber, and he was so good. We have a railway crossing to go over and its pretty scary, JB usually goes over it with a bombproof horse, but that day he did it himself.

Then we got chased by 2 sheep - that was funny, Amber didnt care a hoot, but JB was a bit worried about them. Considering he used to live with sheep, I was really surprised.

There is a long hill which is brilliant to trot up, and off we went - JB deciding that he would try out his medium trot going up hill ! I couldnt stop laughing. He is such a fantastic welsh cob, just so enjoyable to ride.

We are still having problems with the canter though. Im plugging away at it, and until I can establish a regular canter, he wont be doing any ridden shows. So looks like in hand again for this year. Not that I mind, get petrified doing ridden - LOL

Everyone else is fine, apart from a good friend of ours Sam, who had an horrendous accident a week ago ending up in hospital on her back for months I would think. Just goes to show that you have to enjoy each day as it comes.

We both send our best wishes to Sam and hope she gets better soon.

welsh cobs pictures Had a fantastic weekend !

Saith Magical Sapphire, came champion today, beating some excellent competition. She remembered the in hand bit and rose to the challenge. I was so pleased with her, she stood beautifully and the judge was very complimentary on how well she moves.

Goody goody, more points for me !! We have a "Saith Cup" challenge during showing years between me and steve, and Im up on the points at the moment.

I think she has more to come with her movement, but I was over the moon. Such a good girl. The Hand stadium is amazing !

So very happy tonight, even though the weather has been terrible lately. Im going to start on Sapphire this week - riding. She has had a nice holiday and settled in well.

Steve did really well this weekend, on Saturday, oh um ...now where did he come .....? Ah yes 3rd x 2. Not enough points ! LOL Steve ran really well, although not 100% today to take another one of our cobs to the show, as his ankle was playing up.

Very pleased, our first championship of the season. Yahooo ! Hopefully many more to come.

Good girl sapphie !

Welsh Cobs Diary 2 Apr 2008

Back from holiday in France, safe and sound (thank goodness - not a good flyer !) It was lovely watching the snow falling without any guilt feeling about the horses, but apparently the weather was not nice back at home !

Came home on Saturday and up the farm on Sunday. Everyone fine and Steve looked in great form and the farm was still there and all the horses were ok ! So started back on Saith Johnnie Bach. Oh we had a bit of fun, 2.5 hrs later he decided that he would listen to me. Cant force JB, (like most horses) but gentle persuasion finally won the day.

The next day (Monday) he went into the arena a different horse and was so much better. Tuesday he was amazing. I always give alot of rein when starting off and let him trot around the arena for about 20 mins without any control just to see what he would do. He did figure 8's, extended trots and medium trot - it was so funny, he was offering everything he had - wonderful.

Started taking a contact and he was beautifully soft. Self carriage in a few places. Worked on his circles and now he is holding his head in the correct position in a circle with the lightest of contacts.

The canter still needs loads of work. His adrenaline just soars even at a short canter, he thinks its "go into gallop", typical JB, very forward and willing !

No riding today as the Farrier was up and do them all. Amber has pulled something in her hip, so Julian to come out and fix that. Sapphire had her shoes taken off and she was brilliant. JB was good too, eating a bucket of food while the farrier did him without a headcollar. Such a star !

Cindy is starting to look fantastic. Took her to the show before hols and realised how hairy and light weight she looked ! We always take the weight off during winter as its a natural process for them, but ummm each year I think they look ok and then the first shows - ohhhh they look a bit light ! but they are healthy, she was shining.

Dream and the rest are all well. Did a huge tidy up today ! Pleased but it will only last a day ! LOL

So all well and happy, hopefully at the Yeovil show on Saturday with JB in hand and then riding him around the show. That will be the test as his adrenaline goes a bit high at shows !

Was going to take Amber, but thats off now.

And finally Steve is a grandfather. Kelly, his daughter, gave birth to a little baby girl, Heidi yesterday. Apparently very pretty and very content baby. Lucky her !! LOL

Welsh Cobs Diary 16 Mar 2008

Steve has had the all clear from the doctors, so that is brilliant news. He's away at another darts tournament this weekend. Wigan I think.

Been riding Saith Johnnie bach regularly for the past few weeks now and he is getting fitter and more responsive. Starting to ask for a bit of contact and self carriage. Not quite fit enough to hold it long, but its starting to come. He prefers long and low ! LOL

Took Sapphire out for a hack. That was interesting. Alex said that she was a bit nappy when starting off, and it took us 20 mins to get down the drive ! But we got there, and then had a lovely ride. Hopefully when I come back from hols can spend more time on her. Its been a bit busy lately.

Dream is fat ! Took her rug off her today and thought - opps. So in the starvation field already - just for a couple of days, the haylege is very good ! Cindy - ahh she is lovely, jumped on her bareback the other day and she did nothing ! So definitely going to start on her soon. Thinking of taking her to the good friday show. See how she looks on thursday.

Amber ?? Just dont know. Im going to have to find someone for her. She can jump hunt dressage the lot, but is very quirky, so its going to be hard to find the right person for her.

Coriander is coming back up the farm when I come back from my weeks holiday with hubby and kids and friends in France. Skiing in meribel. Im so looking forward to it, a week of pampering. Its been a long wet winter ! No worries for a week ! ahhhhh.

But the rain - its been terrible - im so fed up with it, all our fields are still soaking wet.

This year's foal will be called spring rain ! LOL or Quack !.

welsh cobs pictures Here are the trophies that Saith Stud has sponsored for the Charity Show on 23rd March 2008 in Carmarthen - details on this web page www.charity-show.110mb.com/index.htm

I will be on holiday in France, so Steve will be attending this show. If anyone going sees him, make sure he's ok. !

So whats been happening since the show last week...

I started on Saith Johnnie Bach. He has had 6 months off. Started doing lots of ground work with him and then jumped on him bareback. He was brilliant. Have ridden him every day for the past week and he is working well. Getting the walk and trot nice and consistant and then start on the canter.

I had problems with the canter due to the fact that he had been hunted and he thought that you went into canter and then into gallop ! So thats our major task for the next couple of months. Getting it right on the ground and then on him. He was very relaxed even with the wind blowing. Really love riding him.

Saith Magical Amber, on the other hand, I do not. ! Got on her, walked her around the arena, got back off ! What is it with that mare ??? Next was Saith Magical Dream, she obviously having 2 years off needs to strengthen her back muscles and do ground work to build up stamina and even more muscles to carry me !

She really performed first couple of days. Snorting and prancing - so funny, she is such a character, its all "about her!"

Sapphire I couldnt do anything with as she had lost her shoe and was lame. Farriers came out on thursday, so gave her a couple of days to get ok and should be starting on her next week. Hopefully taking her to a fun ride on sunday to get her going.

She is going to be the first to be clipped with my new clippers as she will be my hacking out horse and doing shows with her.

Once my holiday is over (which I am really looking forward to, a whole week of nothing, but being pampered) its all systems go. I cant see JB coming out for a few months until he is happy with the canter. Dream, has to get fit, and so it looks like its sapphire to come out in the early shows. Well we'll see what happens.

Riding bareback has certainly helped my position. Jb is so responsive and, bless him, slows down when I start getting a bit wobbly ! LOL :) He is working so well, Im keeping him long and low to get a great outline on him, and did some jumping for a bit of fun. He has the most amazing jump. Not great bareback, but I hung on !

Steve went away last weekend after the show and is away this weekend enjoying a darts tournament in London somewhere. I hope he remembers he has to do them in a couple of weeks time ! :)

Went to the Pentyrch Hunt ball last night, so no riding today ! Ouch it was a quiet day just mucking out the barn and did some tractor work and also had a cwtch with all of them. Best time of the day, just hugging !

Welsh Cobs Diary 23 Feb 2008

What an exciting day !!

Yesterday pulled them all in for a feed and a good check over and welsh Cob Saith Magical Sapphire was up for the show. After giving the box a really good clean and wash out, it was time to bath (around 2pm). Started on Sapphie and spent 15 minutes boiling water in a large bucket to wash her in. Her mane was extremely dirty and so washed it twice.

As the water run down her legs (always last to wash!) the mud started to come off, I happened to glance down and straight away noticed one less shoe !! OMG !!! its now 3pm and Id used most of the hot water on her mane (she is rugged so body not bad).

Dried her off and chucked her out. Which one was I going to take ? Dream, JB, Amber, cindy ??? Cindy lost her rug the other day and picked up a tiny cold, so that was her out as I couldnt bath her. JB, well still officially on holiday, so although he was my favourite, he stays home. Amber, na !! I hate showing Amber in hand, she has a knack of working her way into the middle as she thinks you'll end up there anyway !

So poor Dream was the only one left. By now its 3.30 and Im boiling water like mad. Managed to bath her, and boy was she very dirty and very hairy ! and of course not amused ! I just could stop laughing at her though, such a character.

Bathed, dried, plaited and put to bed. Up in the morning and off to the show - yahoooo - got there and 3 lovely cobs in our class, 2 stallions and another mare. Thought ummm, we are very hairy, sweating and when we entered the ring, Dream decided "hoo in hand - " and started to be extremely naughty, much to my delight ! LOL She is such a fun pony.

Came 2nd to one of the stallions which I was over the moon about. My legs were hurting a bit though ! LOL

So the showing for 2008 has started and I enjoyed every minute.

Steve managed to get back for the rugby so that pleased him, but I would have loved to have stayed for the ridden. Will be plenty of chance for that later on. It was great, well worth all the cold days, wet days, getting wellies stuck in the mud and now 3 lost shoes in the field somewhere !

Off to bed with a big smile on my face.

Welsh Cobs Diary 13 Feb 2008

Its now official Welsh Cobs, Saith Magical Charm and Saith Magical Tiffany have been sold to Juliet Gould, both going to the same home, which is lovely. Juliet has a stallion on the ridden circuit at the moment and he is doing really well. Charm and Tiffany are going to be his girlfriends (when Tiff is a bit older !)

Very pleased as Juliet is very excited about them arriving, in a week ! Gulp, and we hope that Charm's foal by Monumental Mason, will be a stunner to start her stud off.

What else .... although the weather has been lovely, had to go shopping with my mum on monday and tuesday Julian came down to do Sapphire, then today, we had some chippings delivered so all day doing that ! I am so tired. In need of a very hot bath !! Steve stayed up the farm all day and did really well. Pleased about that. Not sure whether he is up for the show next week though, might just take sapphire to get her out and about.

Welsh Cobs Diary 9 Feb 2008

Just got home and really happy. Got dream in to the barn and started on her again with ground work. She had a bit of a fit and then settled down. Jumped on her bareback and ohh I thought maybe I shouldnt have LOL Her back went up and so we just stood until it went down again. She was in full grump ! LOL So funny.

Anyway did 15 mins of sitting and quiet walking with her and really pleased. We finished on her being long and low and halting from my seat, as with JB yesterday, but only at a walk. She is so round that it was really difficult to sit on her ! Great fun though. Feel good that Ive started on her, she needs about six weeks work now.

Tomorrow ..... amber ..

Welsh Cobs Diary 9 Feb 2008

What a lovely few days we are having. I jumped on JB yesterday, just bareback to have a plod. Naughty though as he still has 2 months of his holidays left. Couldnt resist it. I was over the moon with him. He remembered everything I done with him before his hols. Went straight into long and low and then self carriage. Really nice. Stopped him just from my seat from a trot to standstill. It was only 5 mins and I must have smiled for the rest of the day. 4 months of not riding him and he just let me do all that, I had to stramble on him - most unprofessional ! LOL, and he just stood. Although Im sure he was thinking, oh she's put on weight ! :)

The last time I rode him we had some fantastic medium trots and he was self carriage for about 60% of the time, long and low the rest. That feeling is incredible, when everything is working from behind and he is as light as a feather in front, just holding the bit in his mouth and listening to my seat and legs. I was worried that I would be a bit nervous, but no, it was brilliant, all in my head !! Once on felt great again.

Hopefully now the fields will start to dry out and I can start - again - on Dream. Its just been so wet and we dont have many fields so cant cut them up in the winter as they need them for grazing. She takes along time to come around to riding, took ages after the last holiday, and of course having a baby (Joe is doing fantastically in Scotland!) has had nearly 18 months off.

Sapphire has settled in well. Just had her pre-vac so a week off now and then can get her out and about. Looking forward to riding her, now I know Im fine.

We have an offer on welsh cobs Saith Magical Charm and Saith Magical Tiffany. Charm and Tiffany - if all goes ahead - are going to the same home, which is really nice for them and us. The lady who is thinking of having them also has a top stallion that is going to be bred to Charm and Tiffany. But will fill you all in later when everything is finalised and settled.

Saith Magical Amber - well Im going to get myself over this. I just dont know what it is with this horse. I have worked on her for years, she is at novice dressage level and I still have a mental problem with her. I cant figure it out. She has not done anything with me, except take the pee now and again. Nothing serious. So what is it with her ? Why cant I get my head around this.

I love hacking her with a friend, but when it comes to schooling her, even though she is doing counter canter and is very beautifully balanced, even to the stage of doing a 10 metre circle in canter, have this wierd feeling in my stomach the whole time. VERY strange.

Going to put this aside and try again with her. Wierd !!

Dot and Liz are doing brilliantly with Saith DK. He went for a hack on his own and was so confident and happy. They have such a bond those two ! Will be posting up new pictures soon.

OK, rushing up there now. Beautiful day.

Welsh Cobs Diary 6 Feb 2008

Welsh cob Saith Magical Sapphire has arrived home. She is settling in well and just waiting for Julian to come over next week to check her over before I can start riding her. Which is good as she needs to have her flu and tet injections so works in well.

Still cant ride any of them, as the weather has totally saturated our fields and although I dont mind riding in a bog, just cant cut them up as no grass for the spring and summer, Although it is sunny today, which is lovely.

The roads are pretty dangerous around us too, and not having a bombproof horse, gets a bit scary when tractors comes past, usually towing something very noisy, bikes, boy racers, dangerous bends - it all adds up to me grateful that Ive managed to survive another ride on the road and get home safely.

So looks like its going to be in hand for the first couple of shows until the fields start to dry out. Which seems like never at the moment. !!

Im going to hurt though, havent ridden for ages. Ouch. Funny isnt it, so wanted to ride this winter, bought a welsh cob that, again put us in debt, and after 2 rides and her giving me a flying lesson on the second, she's going to be a broodmare ! It seems the powers above just dont want me to ride ! LOL. though Im sure she would be a brilliant ride for someone else and win so much showing as she has such perfect conformation, and moves really well. Anyone interested in a stunning palomino ???? LOL
