Supreme Champion welsh cob Saith Johnnie Bach was born on the night that Wales beat South Africa - ohhh
many years ago now ! lol to be precise 26th June 1999. Steve was on duty up the farm and I was in the pub
with my husband celebrating - in comes Steve saying, she's going to foal, rushed up there, and as we ran out
of the door, everyone was singing and the last words I heard was "joni Bach" from a welsh song, Sosban
Bach- no towels or anything and in posh clothes. When we got there she had foaled and JB was shaking so
much I made steve take off his T-shirt so I could wipe him and get him warm.
Stayed the two hours waiting for him to suckle and then left. So Johnnie Bach was born, spelt a bit different
than the song, in memory of my father who was John.
Johnnie has been my inspiration - we sold him and then bought him back, not quite the horse we had sold. He
had so much potential before we sold him, and sadly came back with many problems. Ive spend years trying
to get inside his head and trying different techniques to re-train him. He has been a huge challenge and an
enjoyable one, except on "those" days when he is saying no mum and I have to stop and think why - what am
I doing that is wrong. Of all the riding styles he likes the most, is of course, the hardest for me. Classical
Dressage. He loves the lightness of it and really works a treat when I get it right. Huge challenge for me who
rides like a sack of potates !
I love him dearly, he shows me when Im riding well and tells me when Im not ! He has won so much in hand
and under saddle, including 2 NPS Silver Medals and coming 6th at the Royal Welsh under saddle. He can
jump like a stag, and has hunted, cross country'd coming 3rd in the Welsh Performance show, as well as 1st in
the novice ridden.
He has competed in dressage and showjumping as well, and easily jumps 4 ft. He is the ultimate fun horse, if a
bit forward on times lol. I love all our cobs, even when sold, but he has taken that tiny bit more of me. I adore
him, and its "all about JB". ! He is getting on a bit now, but still makes me laugh so much when riding him. He'll
do anything for pony cubes, which I have used to full advantage ! Positive training is the only way with JB! He
still finds certain situations stressful, but Im working on those to get him to realise that everything he does -
its ok by me as long as I stay on ! lol
