Welsh Cobs Diary 31 Mar 2005

Been busy this week, but doesnt seem like I've done much !

On Good Friday went to the NPS show at Badgeworth - packed ! Dream went really badly in the Picton ridden. Just couldnt understand it. Then we we got home realised that she had hurt her back again. Really sore ! So saddle off again to be re-stuffed !

On Monday went to Avon & Borders show in Hand and Morgan came 1st ! I was so pleased for him, although he didnt really enjoy going on his own, but we got some great points for the gelding scheme.

So no riding this week, just grooming like mad and getting Amber ready for next Thursday at Malvern. Saddle should be done on Monday so I can start on Dream again.

We were going on a fun ride this weekend ! Its always the way isnt it.

Cindy is huge now and ready to pop - hoping for a lovely foal from her. Cant wait to play with it once its born ! Just wish it would warm up a bit now. It was so cold down there today.

welsh cobs pictures Had a great visit today from Gareth and his sister Gaynor and daughter Bethan. They came up to see Dragon as they want to use him on their mare. Storm did a wonderful display and Saith DK mirrored him in the other field it was quite funny to see.

Anyway, got a quickie picture of DK (2 yr old colt), after of course having a good roll. One day I will get "that picture." In the meantime, we have to keep on trying ! Saith DK is a good type of Welsh Cob, bred along Derwen lines.

Here is Saith Magical Dream today - very tired - after a long day's riding.

We went to Badgeworth Arena for a show there. Took Dream and Saith Morgan - his first show. Started with Dream and working hunter - massive height - 1ft 6" !!! Anyway, we got around clear and she was brill. Came 4th in that, which I was really pleased with. I didnt think I would do it.

Then it was rush up and get Morgan out of the box and take him in the 1,2, and 3 yr old in hand - 10 in the class and some nice looking horses. We came an amazing 2nd !!! His first time out and yesterday I couldnt even get a trot out of him. He was a very good boy and once he gets it, he will be great to show.

Then it was another rush back up to the box, put Morgan on and take Dream down to the in hand. She was a bit tired and we were pulled in last but one. Then she had a good run and we ended up 1st ! Which was lovely.

Then it was back up to the box for a rest ! The ridden in the afternoon and in a large class she came 3rd. She did struggle a bit, so I need to get her a bit fitter now but a lovely day alround and then to cap it all Wales winning the Grand Slam !

Brilliant news today, National Pony Society journal came and we're in it !!! I did an article on Saith a while back hoping that we might get in, but WOW didnt think we would, I didnt think it was good enough. Reading it again, Im still not sure !!! Really, really pleased though.

Here is Dream in the barn today. She is doing her first working hunter class with me on Saturday ! Im a bit worried, but it will be a lot of fun, especially for anyone watching. Ha ha

Had a lovely stud visit today from Anna and Lara Stevens from Swansea. They breed Shetlands very successfully, and came to see our boys. It was great, I could eat cream cakes ! Lovely people and I hope they liked our cobs, even in the pouring rain !

welsh cobs pictures Here's some photos of Storm taken today. He is 2 yr old colt and we will be keeping him as a stallion in the meantime to see what he turns out like. He has a wonderful temperament and is for sale - but only to the right home !!! He's special this one !

welsh cobs pictures Im going photo mad at the moment.

Here is Amber - trotting today with Tracey. With the wind blowing and the sheep next door she did really well although she was a bit tense, I was so pleased with her.

I have a friend who has a half sister to Dragon for sale. She is Sydenham Crocus by Nebo Magic and out of Sydenham Orchid (Dragon's Mum). She's around 15.1 hh and has produced foals. She is 10 yrs old and liver chestnut. If anyone is interested, please get in touch with me and I will put you in touch with Caroline. Hopefully will have a photo of her soon.

Went down to Dorchester today ! Did it in good time, but freezing again ! It was a small "pre showing " show by the SWA of WP&CS. Dream went really well and came 3rd in the Welsh C & D class. I was so pleased for her. She took it all in her stride and seemed to enjoy it. Got a bit tense on the individual but apart from that no bucking and easy ride ! I must say that I hate double bridles, Im going to put her back in the snaffle from now on. I just cant get to grips with the reins ! OK so we wont look professional, but at least I can enjoy it a bit more ! without worrying where my reins are and are they the same length etc !

There was a nasty accident there though and I really hope the lady is ok. Just makes you realise that it can happen when you least expect it.

Morgan came for his first real ride ready for the show next week - he's still pretty hairy, but he needs to start somewhere and then by the middle of the season he may actually know what to do ! He was so good in the box, just the odd neigh and then quiet. So thats another plus going for him !

Tiring day, but well worth it.

Welsh Cobs Diary 2 Mar 2005

Went to a show jumping clinic held locally with Jan Evans. Wow did Dream jump or what !! I was nearly airbourne myself on a few occasions. She is just rushing her jumps, so our working hunter may be the fastest in history ! She was so excited by it all ! I really enjoyed it - afterwards .... sitting at home with a glass of Cava. I knew that welsh cobs can jump, but I need wings to keep on her !

Show on Sunday first one for Dream this year, so it will be good to see how she has come on, or not. Long way again down towards Exeter, but the class isnt until the afternoon, so we can amble down there.

Welsh Cobs Diary 28 Feb 2005

"Team Saith" arrived at Badgeworth Arena very tired from a very early start. Saith Magical Amber was there to do her first show ! Tracey brought Saith JB for Victoria and Hannah brought her own pony.

Victoria did really well on Johnnie Bach, coming 1st in the M&M Novice working hunter, 2nd in the Junior M&M ridden and 3rd in the young handlers class. A very happy 12 yr old girl going home !

Saith Magical Amber was a bit nervous - not as much as I was - but Tracey was excellent in riding her and giving her confidence. She went into the ring and when it was her turn to do the individual show, everything seemed to happen ! A very loud bang, clapping for the next ring, all the horses coming out of the next ring, including JB whom she saw ! So it was eventful, but Tracey coped well and we had our first 1st with her under saddle.

Great day and Amber will learn so much from that show, especially as she has only had about 10 rides on her since broken ! She's a good mare, needs maturing now and only time can do that.

Showing season started ! So enjoyed the day even though it was long - more of those on the way though ! LOL.

Cant wait to get naughty Dream out - now that is going to be fun !

Welsh Cobs Diary 25 Feb 2005

Tracey came on Wednesday and we both rode. I rode a very naughty Dream and she rode Amber. She went so well, cantered on the right leg every time ! Whereas Dream, who is supposed to know decided to do everything she could to upset Amber. She pulled faces at her, rushed past her when she got in front, cantered when we were supposed to be trotting - it was just so funny. I think she was a bit jealous !

She then showed off and extended the whole of the field, with me hanging on in fits of laughter, she was almost saying to Amber - see thats how its done ! Welsh cobs - people just dont know what they are missing if they dont have one !

We hopefully will be showing on Sunday with Amber, weather permitting, and I should be able to get some photos for the Saith web page.

Lots of people are contacting me with a view to buy a ridden. Unfortunately we dont have any ridden at the moment, but if you want to go onto www.horsequest.co.uk this has a section D Welsh cob part with loads of Welsh cobs on there for sale. We only have the boys for sale, Storm, Morgan and DK and they are only 2.

Welsh Cobs Diary 21 Feb 2005

Just got back from a week's skiing in America. What fun ! I think I enjoyed the Apres ski bit the best !

Rode Dream first time today, so now must have a bath - otherwise will be a bit sore tomorrow. Tracey had Amber for the week and she is now walking trotting and cantering, havent ridden her today, but will tomorrow. That will be fun ! Boys are down from the top field now as its our hay field and they look a bit hairy to say the least. They will have to stay in for a little while until we have sorted out one of our more "secure" fields as Storm likes to jump ! He follows his dad !

Great news about JB. He entered a show jumping competition on Friday and was in a "team". He had to compete in 3 different jumping courses and only had one fence down. The "team" came 1st and Victoria was over the moon as she had a grooming kit as a prize !

So now its back to reality and working hard towards the showing season and getting some courage to do more show jumping. If anyone knows of any fun rides please email me !

Welsh Cobs Diary 5 Feb 2005

Had a stud visit from some lovely people today, Collette and Mark Williams from Northampton. They looked at all the wet bedraggled horses and then went onto another stud in Lampeter. Really enjoyed it, even though, we had no biscuits / cakes and forget to get them to sign the visitors book ! Must start getting myself more organised again. It was just so nice to show them our cobs and we hope they enjoyed it to.

Although I must try not to talk so much ! ha ha.

Welsh Cobs Diary 4 Feb 2005

welsh cobs pictures Had a funny day today, firstly got my bottom wet ! I was day dreaming sitting on the edge of the tank watching the boys play and waiting for the water to fill up. Well you can imagine, I didnt look that often and then I realised that the tank was full when I had a soaking wet jeans !

Then went to watch JB and Victoria being trained at Talygarn Riding Centre with a Russian olympic Rider who is based in West Wales. Now I may have got that wrong, but will get full details soon. He was teaching show jumping and here is a picture of Saith Johnnie Bach jumping and jumping in Welsh cob fashion.

Victoria's main focus is the WP&CS (Welsh Pony & Cob Society) Performance Show held at Brecon every year. Its a lovely show and hopefully Tracey and Victoria would have brought JB on enough to do all the classes. These include, dressage, working hunter, show jumping, cross country and showing over 2 days.

Welsh Cobs Diary 3 Feb 2005

Had some show schedules through today - at last I can start to dream (with Dream!) with probably thousands of other competitors as to Welsh Cob Champion ! Its just great that the long winter is now ending and now thinking of how many rugs I can get on them to get the hair out, and should I start bringing them in or leave them out ! They are out until I come back from a skiing holiday - but our 1st show is on 27th at Badgeworth Arena and ummm Im thinking we are going to have hairies !

Dream is clipped, but since it was my 2nd attempt, it does look a bit strange in places ! So no big hopes for her until her summer coat comes through. There is a show jumping clinic in Hand stadium Im thinking of taking her to. Just to get some confidence in her and me. I still can only jump 1ft and my aim is to do working hunter, so I must be able to do 2 ft 6. So I might just go for that. Body protector at the ready !!!

Welsh Cobs Diary 2 Feb 2005

Very happy news today - Saith Johnnie Bach our welsh cob gelding has been sold to Tracey and Victoria Bertorelli. They have had him on loan for the winter and just cant part with him ! I am over the moon as he really couldnt have a better home. So watch this space as he is destined for great things ! Victoria is only 12 and has clicked with JB so much. She will be concentrating on his jumping more and just generally enjoying him.

I can only say that it this has been a very happy day today, and I wish them all the best of luck with him and know that he will be safe and sound in their capable hands. Tracey is a BSHII and so talented with re- training horses. I have never met anyone that rides so well and has so much passion for Welsh cobs and their ability to perform plus the fact that Tracey is such an optimistic person and even when things get tough will strive to get the best out of our cobs. Tracey is the person I aspire to and to buy JB, is a real honour for us.

Its kinda of sadness as well though, as JB and I have been through so much together, winning Supreme of shows and just generally growing up together. (me growing older I should say !! ) He is such a smart lad and just loves his work, and gives 100%. - Dont you just love welshies !!! At least I have Storm coming up behind him and looking just as good !!

Good luck Tracey and Victoria !!!

welsh cobs pictures Here is JB with Tracey on Boxing day. This picture was in her local Bridgend Recorder with an article about hunting. He did enjoy himself that day. He is in the middle.

Amber was going so well today until a shotgun went off in the next field. She turned into a quivering mess. So glad Tracey stayed on, but that was training finished for the day. I think it will be back to basics for Amber, until her confidence comes back.

Oh well !!!

Welsh Cobs Diary 24 Jan 2005

Tracey came up today to help train Amber. We are still at the beginning stage with her - with me in the centre of the school and tracey riding and me with the lunge just keeping her going. Today we decided to take her off the lunge and just used the lunging whip to keep her going. She went really well, until I wandered off to the corner - she stopped dead !!! Tracey trying everything encouraging to get her moving again, but no she wasnt having it until I came back into the middle, then off she went - her security blanket back in place.!!

It was just so funny, theres me thinking that she was going SO well, and working easily - just goes to show they are always one step ahead. Tracey is coming back up on Wednesday, so fingers crossed she will go on her own !

welsh cobs pictures Here is our box photo taken in the summer that we are now selling.

Welsh Cobs Diary 18 Jan 2005

Moved Dragon and Annie off our bog field - its just been so wet this year - down to a lovely 2 acre field with a fresh water stream going through it. They will stay there now until the visiting mares come.

Had to put this in. Its from Julie who bought Saith Stef from us a few years ago now. This is a typical Welshie !!!

Just thought I would write a quick note to say Stef has just cost me a few extra pennies in replacing plants!! He has very cheekily been pinching plants out of pots from a ladies garden by somehow managing to stretch his neck big time over a flint wall whilst in the field. He hasn't been eating them (thank goodness) just picking them up, swinging the pots about until the plants came out and basically trashed them but making sure the remains ended up in the garden. The owner of the unfortunate plants saw all this going on and just did not get to them in time ha ha!!! The lady did laugh about it as did her husband at the time it was going on. As I said, thankfully he did not eat any of them and none were poisonous which was I have to say my first though! We have now fenced the area off away from the flint wall so unless he takes it into his head to jump it, the new plants should be safe! Oh, forgot to say, the field he and Ben are in is at least 6 acres! You would think he would have better things to do wouldn't you?

It was so funny reading that from Julie. Typical welshie doing his thing !

Welsh Cobs Diary 14 Jan 2005

Today was just wonderful. Took Dream out for a 2 and half hour hack with two friends and went for a fantastic gallop, they were a bit faster than us, but we sort of kept up. Then found some jumps and did those. I was really looking forward to the show at Badgeworth Arena this weekend, but poor Steve is suffering still with his back so we cant go as I cant drive the box. If anyone is interested in the box, Im selling her now as I need a smaller one for me to drive. Such a shame as she is a grand one and a good runner.

I wanted to go as they have a working hunter class. Just wanted to see if Dream is up for it, as she seems to jump anything in her path now. May be a bit different in the ring though LOL.

Welsh Cobs Diary 13 Jan 2005

We hope that everyone can now enjoy reading about our wonderful cobs and their adventures with this new diary. Of course, now I can bore people even more by nattering on about my fun with our Welshies.

Since last year, Dream has become Supreme Champion under saddle at a Christmas Show in aid of Trallwm Farm which helps horses and other animals. I was really pleased about this as this is her first 1st and champion and then Supreme since we bought her back.

We are on Amber now and walking around the fields. There will be loads of updates on her training.

So hopefully on a weekly basis, or whenever something exciting happens this will be the place that I can share it on. Photos as well as soon as I can figure out how to do it LOL.
