Saith Stud Welsh Cobs Diary |
Welsh Cobs Diary 2 Sep 2010
Just had the most fantastic ride on Saith Magical Amber yesterday (pictured). She hasnt been out for ages and my friend Sian said come out with me, so jumped at the opportunity. I was really expecting her to be a bit spooky, but she was a star and happily plodded along for 2 hours. The only thing she shied at was a motorbike that was against a gate. It had already passed her, and she took no notice of it then ! lol. Sian has a lovely section C - so a welshie day out Bit stiff today lol but the day was just so nice and not too many cars and vans. It was perfect for hacking, warm and hardly any flies. Really enjoyed it. Just love to hack. No shows this weekend, steve is off to darts on Sunday, and Pete and I have a dinner party on Sat to sort out the skiing holiday. Steve and I are off to a sale tomorrow to sell our stable doors, in Pyle and have had interest already which is great, hopefully pays for the farrier next week. Hope this weather continues - its just so lovely. :) Had a stud visit from Poppy and friends to see our horses, enjoyed that as well. Nice week so far :) Opps should be touching wood when I say that LOL H

Welsh Cobs Diary 30 Aug 2010
Well what a lovely day !! Saith Magical Ginger suprised us both, by coming 1st out of 5 and then Champion !!! our little yearling champion on her first show !!! Im still in shock. Good judge too, Tracey Hook - and when she came me the rosette she said, this is the start of many to come !! What a lovely thing to say. Im still smiling from ear to ear and the sun was shining. She loaded there and back superbly and travelled well. Fantastic day, that I still cant believe, some photos on her page. She didnt run very well, but I thought she might be a bit "OMG". She jumped a few times, but held it together and I was so pleased that we both got through the day. She has such a bright future, even with her colour :) Still cant believe it :) :) H

Welsh Cobs Diary 29 Aug 2010
Here is Frankie (Saith Now Then). He had a visit from Nikki and Garry and their kids on Saturday. It was lovely, such nice people and superb kids. Frankie was a bit shy, but seemed to enjoy the attention. He has a lovely soul. Thank goodness the rain has stopped. We are taking Ginger to a small show tomorrow - her first one - Im hoping I get around ok, she's still not sure of trotting with me so hopefully will want to cling a bit to me. She has to start somewhere :) Fell in love with a Highland stallion on Horsequest - (my second favourite native breed) thought of introducing a new breed "highcob". Mix between a highland and a welsh cob. Best in the world ! lol He is lovely, no price on him, so would need a lottery win, or someone who I know to win the lottery. He would suit me down to the ground. Now I have to mortgage the house (pete wont be too pleased about that) or sell something.... steve ??? lol Never mind, will have to look around and find a quiet one for me while JB recovers. Still cant bond with Amber, we have to make a decision on her, we either have to sell her or put her in foal - im pleased with Pepper, her son, so maybe should put her in foal, but she's so talented at jumping and dressage, I feel she is so wasted with me. Have to make decisions. Will be back on tomorrow after "the show" hopefully in one piece. H

Here is Saith Black Pepper, cant believe how quickly he is growing, 14.1 at the moment ! Took Delight and Ginger to the local show, JB babysat them both and they were brilliant. Both loaded and unloaded at the show, eyes popping and then wandered around and back on the trailer, jb not phased at all and ate as much hay as he could :) Took a small video of Pepper yesterday, bit hard to get as it was horrendous with the rain, and on my own he really didnt want to perform very much ! Such a character. It will be on his page soon, until then its on our channel on You Tube - Saithstud. Steve played darts on Saturday, and came in the top 32, which apparently is good ! what do I know !! lol. Its pouring here and Im trying to decide whether to go now, or have a cup of Tea. I think the tea will win over. Time for rugs I think !! H

Here is Saith Magical Ginger, our yearling. Although the colour isnt quite there for me, everything else is ! We were supposed to be in Mid somerset show today - fab show - but hazel decided to hurt herself and cut her eye - nothing serious, but one of those things. So it was a bit wierd today. I decided that I was fed up of the horses putting their heads through our fencing to grab a few bits of grass on the other side. So manure went down - that should stop them ! Have to take ginger and Delight on a trip soon to get them used to travelling. there is a small show about 10 mins away from us, so will take them there and let them wander around. Well hopefully, if nothing goes wrong. H

Welsh Cobs Diary 12 Aug 2010
Took Saith Johnnie Bach to Avon & Borders show on Sunday and the Gelding Class 4 yrs and over was the biggest of the medal classes !! Anyway, came 2nd and he went really well. Lovely day and lovely show and really pleased with JB - redeemed himself. Storm was there too, and did really well in a huge class of novices came 4th and 4th in the welsh ridden. Then we found a show in Badminton on Wednesday, so thought, yahooo. Should have gone to the vale of glamorgan show, but just thought it would be more fun doing it, than watching. Supposed to take Amber - always give them a feed while bathing and she bolted her food and started choking - OMG, anyway, after a good cough she was ok, but I didnt want to take her after that, just incase she did something in the trailer. So went to get hazel and she had a runny nose, looked at Delight and thought she looks good, but really havent done any work with her, so poor JB got pulled out of the field, quick wash down and on the trailer. Huge show, and I mean huge, Ive never seen so many boxes. We got there at 10.30 and eventually got on at 3.30 ! LONG day, but a good one. JB came 1st M&M and the judge loved his movement, he then came Reserve champion, beaten by a beautiful ridden Dartmoor. So very happy. Today, we had a stud visit !! Bethan and Elgin (from Gwrthafarn stud) and their girls went to St. Fagans and then popped in to see us. They had the full tour and everyone performed well. Ginger was a hit and Elgin offered £500 to take her off our hands ! lol. I was tempted LOL. Had a lovely chat although it was getting cold as the evening wore on. Such a nice evening with them, if anyone gets to go to Nebo Fronarth etc., they are so near them, you must pop in and enjoy their company and see their cobs. Quiet day tomorrow, checking the herd and back to the house for some .... housework - boring ! H

Welsh Cobs Diary 1 Aug 2010
Been an exciting week with SM Hazelnut Whirl winning 1st, champion and supreme of Show yesterday at Golden Valley Show. She beat the ridden to win the show Supreme ! Couldnt believe it so happy for her. She was a bit flat and pretty tired at the end (not the only one) but she kept going for me. Also Dream is in foal to Haniel Cochise, photos to go up soon of him on our stallion page, and Coriander is in foal to Janton Pheonix. JB has disgraced himself by being extremely silly out on a hack with a friend the other day, on the turnabout to come home, he went into canter and then went into bronking and then a rear. I was a bit shocked, nothing nasty just lost it in his head. 3 years Ive been working on him and in 3 seconds he went back to his old ways. Very frustrating. I keep thinking is it all worth it with him, I just dont know at the moment. We had gone way past all that a few years ago. Maybe the Royal Welsh just was too much for him and he went back to how he was. I dont know, but its heart breaking to think I have to go back to the beginning again. Have I the patience or strength ? In hand seems so nice and easy now. :) So yes a bit of a week really. Hoping Jb will redeem himself at Avon & Borders next weekend - just in hand but great that they always support the geldings, in the medal class. Lucy has done brilliantly again in her dressage, and Storm is not even thinking about being naughty about going in the trailer. So glad he is over that. Some photos of hazel on her page. H

Welsh Cobs Diary 24 Jul 2010
Back safe and sound from the Hoys qualifier at the ~Royal Welsh~ What a great day, even though we had gunshot before the start of us going around the arena, I managed to stay in. JB was in flight mode, head up and totally hollow. He wasnt listening and trying to gallop off all the time, I was really struggling to keep him under control. The individual was very poor, with his head up - all over the place, he did do a nice gallop, but trying to bring him back was hard. At home I only have to pat him and sit up and he instantly comes back, but obviously the adrenaline was way too much. We got around and I was really pleased some videos on you tube. Dont know what our marks were as it was so late when we left. But would love to know ! lol well maybe not. He had dropped so much weight from Monday, but Im hoping that going through something that exciting might just make him realise that its not as bad as he thinks. The gunshots didnt help of course, thats upstairs have a laugh !! Had my back done today, and Ive a few problems there, so quiet day today. Two tennis balls will be my best friends for a while ! lol H

Welsh Cobs Diary 21 Jul 2010
Here is Saith DK and Saith Johnnie Bach. (having a smooch !) I think Ive got over it all now, and gutton for punishment, going again tomorrow for the HOYS class. I booked in Amber and Johnnie to the class, so if one went down I could at least take the other. I was going to take Amber after Monday, but I just have to go through this with Johnnie. So no TV and if I fall off, then its just in front of a few 100 ! lol Im hoping he settles a bit tomorrow, hacked him out for the past few days to relax him and have a talk to him. Big talk, just hope he listens tomorrow. 60 entered in the class, so probably 40 to 50 will turn up. He wont be noticed at all, im just hoping we get round ok this time. Not as early start - leaving at 9.30 as we wont on until late in the afternoon. Wish me luck ! H

Welsh Cobs Diary 19 Jul 2010
Well I made it to the Royal Welsh. Got up at 3am and even steve was up there by 4.10, so we were off. Met Dot, liz and the great DK and was so excited and scared. Went into the ring and JB was good, walking with a ping which I liked, then when he got to the grand stand we were cantering, which I did not like (well actually it was a lovely collected canter) managed to control him and went into trot and had a great time, but just keeping in control, which is pretty normal for JB at a show. Then went into canter, still keeping him there, and the trot across the middle which he did, then everyone seemed to walk and I thought that was it - ready for the gallop, but it wasnt. It all went pear shaped from there. I asked for canter with people cantering around me and he just lost it, started doing leaps and I thought do I stay in the ring and fall off, or take him out. I didnt think long ! We turned around unfortunately in the hunter class - and a HORRIBLE woman was shouting at me, get out of our class - god if that is what these people are like out hunting - you can bloddy keep it. She could see I was struggling with him. Anyway, managed to get out of the ring and re-assure jb all was ok. he was pretty stressed out and so was I ! But I stayed on. Missed the gallop which I really was upset about. Saith DK (dot and liz) stayed in and he was a star, just did the job - swopping next year ! My other friend Shelly also did the gallop and Ted was just great. I felt like I let everyone down, especially JB and Steve I still have alot to do with him, but getting him to such a buzzy show and with me being so nervous, he had alot to cope with. Mind you when I saw the judge yanking a cob in the mouth several times, I thanked the gods that we did come out. JB would have had him on the floor. We managed to do some good trots though which was fun, unfortunately Steve didnt manage to video any of them. So maybe next year we will start again and try to get the gallop ! When we came out I was saying never again. And then after half a bottle of Cava to drown my sorrows, I was ok whens the next one ! lol Which is on Thursday - its a toss up between taking amber and taking Jb to try and get him over this as again quite a buzzy ring. At least this time we wont be on Sky TV. lol So I can try and push him through it to show him that its ok. Got home in one piece and turn out jb and thought, ok, we need to chase these demons out. dont know what upset him at shows for him to be like this, but Im not giving up - could take 10 years but we will get him to enjoy the shows rather than get stressed out. Brilliant day though, saw some friends and had loads of chats, so tired now... bed is calling and its only 8pm ! Thanks so much for everyone who has supported me in the weeks up to this event, you have all be just so great. H

Welsh Cobs Diary 18 Jul 2010
D day tomorrow ! Cannot believe how quickly it has arrived. Im just sitting here, with a glass of Cava wondering if I should drink the bottle ! Seriously, though, Im pretty scared. I know Jb will look after me. Hoping to leave the farm around 4.30 am and be on around 9ish I think. Im going over lists and lists the only thing left is my clothes for walking around afterwards. Wet weather gear probably ! I just hope I dont let JB down with my riding. Im old and not as supple as I used to be, and I think I will be hanging on ! Anyway, its just a bit of fun and looking forward to it as much as dreading it ! As long as we get round and Jb enjoy's himself thats all that matters. He will be pretty excited though ! Let you know what happens. H

Welsh Cobs Diary 15 Jul 2010
Took SM Amber to NPS 25, in Bristol, lovely show. Got on her and thought Oh no. She instantly felt sticky. Said to Steve she' s not quite right, nothing major but just not there. So worked her in a bit, and she did everything, but not like on Sunday. went in the class and she looked so different. We have found a picture of an ancestor of hers that is her double from 1811 ish, but in that class she looked extremely light. She did everything ok, but with no spark. So got Bethan up yesterday and she said she was trapped on her hind leg. sorted that and Bethan also did Jb - he had a nice massage ready for ..... MONDAY - ahhhhhhhh Im really getting nervous now - everytime I think of it my stomach churns over ! JB was so full of himself today he was literally flying. I hope he is ok on Monday, and enjoys it as much as I am going to do and do a good job of hiding when the picking of the 20 cobs start ! So exciting. H

Welsh Cobs Diary 12 Jul 2010
Took Amber to her first show in ages. Since Ive only ridden her not even a dozen times, it was a trail to see where she is and what I have to do. Well, she was a star, she did wrong leg it once, but that was it. I cant get her to gallop at home, but she really went for it - I was so pleased with her. We came 4th, but she is not everyone's cup of tea being on the lighter side of the welshies. She is off again tomorrow to Bristol for the NPS area 25. Just cant believe its a week to go to the Royal Welsh Show. Saith Johnnie Bach and I will be in the ridden geldings class - I think it will be on about 9ish in the main ring. OMG im already wetting myself. !! Im going to ride him, like I stole him ! Its going to be an amazing experience. One I know I will never forget, especially if I fall off ! H

Welsh Cobs Diary 1 Jul 2010
Rode Jb and Amber yesterday - you couldnt get further apart than them. Amber does the most wonderful walk to canter which Ive never done on a horse, but still will not go into extension and literally does a one pace trot and thats it ! Some work there. tried a gallop - nope ! LOL So my individual will consist of canter ! Then JB, what a difference, it was trying to stop him galloping ! he was in serious pingy mode and we had some wonderful collections, but not through calmness !! There is no way the ridden Judge at the Royal Welsh will be able to handle him, so I am definitely doing the gallop and hiding behind the nearest 16hh welshie. Its a Bucket List thing really, before I kick it, or get too old to ride. :) Always wanted to do the Royal Welsh and gallop in the main arena. Then a HOYS class, that will be on the Thursday at the RW with Amber. Then a working hunter class - thats going to be exciting too as I always forget my way around jumps as Im so nervous. And of course, an Olympia class. Ohh so excited already - only 3 weeks !! H
